Tippy dreams of one day changing the world, but still has to figure out how to exactly. She likes words and its capacity to invoke great emotion in people. On this silly little blog she chronicles travel, music, food, advocacy, pretentious things like books, film & art, and of course everyday life.

"There are things about ourselves that we need to get rid of; there are things we need to change. But at the same time, we do not need to be too desperate, too ruthless, too combative. Along the way to usefulness and happiness, many of those things will change themselves, and the others can be worked on as we go. The first thing we need to do is recognize and trust our own Inner Nature, and not lose sight of it."

    New Books!

Even if iPads, Kindle’s, and other fancy readers are of the future, I don’t think I’ll ever stop buying books.

I love the feeling of having a book in my hand. Especially if it’s new and right out of the plastic cover it comes in when you purchase it. Going through shelves upon shelves of books in a bookstore finding the exact book you’re looking for, smelling the paper, flipping through its pages for the very first time. There’s really nothing like it.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against e-readers. I’d love if someone gave me an iPad or a kindle- I actually do plan on getting one in the near future. But even if I do get one I wouldn’t stop buying books because I think they’re fantastic things that will never grow outdated.

All this just came to mind because last night while my mom was at a jewelry show I took a trip to Powerbooks to kill time and ended up buying two new books.

I’ve been wanting to read Benjamin Hoff’s The Tao of Pooh for quite some time now but I’ve been forgetting to pick up a copy whenever I’m in a book store. Yesterday though I finally remembered to buy it.

Also because I’m one of those people who think “Look, this won an award. It must be pretty good” when it comes to books, film, and almost everything else in life, I also bought a copy of Tahar Ben Jelloun’s The Blinding Absence of Light. The book won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and though I’ve never heard of this particular award before I have heard of Tahar Ben Jelloun in the past.

I don’t think I’ll be able to finish both books over the semestral break since I have a lot on my plate but I do hope I at least get to start them.
