5 Hand Me Down Accessories From Mom Which I Love
I’m one of those girls who is lucky enough to get to go shopping in my mother’s closet because she has great style and really cool stuff. I like her accessory collection in particular. Over the years she has handed me down a couple of really nice pieces which belonged to her when she was younger, and these items have always been favorites of mine. They’re also the accessories most dear to me, and the ones that I use all the time not just because they’re interesting pieces but also because there’s so much meaning behind them as well.
1. Tooth Bracelet

My mom got this bracelet from the Mountain Province in the 80’s when she was on tour with her activist singing group there. According to her it’s made out of some animal tooth, and she bought it from an old Igorot woman who was selling native jewelry. From what my mom remembers the woman she bought it from told her that she made the bracelet for her own daughter, but because it no longer fit she decided to sell it instead. I’ve always found the history of this bracelet cool and how it was passed on from mother to daughter on both ocassions.
2. A Vintage Tigers Eye Ring from Columbia

I like chunky vintage rings, but I hardly find any that fit my very thin fingers. So it was great when my mom bought this from a bazaar a couple of years ago because aside from the fact that it’s chunky and very vintage looking, it fits me well because it’s adjustable. I’ve been wearing it everyday after she told me it was mine to keep recently.
3. Vintage Ray Ban sunglasses

These sunglasses are older than me. They were my mom’s in college, and she gave them to me when I was in high school after unearthing them from somewhere. It amazes me how sturdy they still are after all the years she used them (and eventually outgrew them) and after I’ve clocked in quite a bit of mileage with them too.
4. An Amber Necklace

I’m crazy for Amber, and while this necklace hasn’t been handed down to me just quite yet, it’s my favorite. I just felt the need to put this in because I like it THAT much.
5. A pair of Mexican Looking Earrings

These pair of earrings are also something that my mom bought in the 80’s. She got them from a jewelry street vendor in San Diego, and I love its detail as well as its colors. Another reason why I like these so much though is because they remind me of what my mother’s sense of style was back then which was very reflective of the life she lead. I’ve always liked things which have stories behind them, and as far as stories go these pair of earring have a pretty interesting one to tell.
