Tippy dreams of one day changing the world, but still has to figure out how to exactly. She likes words and its capacity to invoke great emotion in people. On this silly little blog she chronicles travel, music, food, advocacy, pretentious things like books, film & art, and of course everyday life.

5 Hand Me Down Accessories From Mom Which I Love

I’m one of those girls who is lucky enough to get to go shopping in my mother’s closet because she has great style and really cool stuff. I like her accessory collection in particular. Over the years she has handed me down a couple of really nice pieces which belonged to her when she was younger, and these items have always been favorites of mine. They’re also the accessories most dear to me, and the ones that I use all the time not just because they’re interesting pieces but also because there’s so much meaning behind them as well.

    1. Tooth Bracelet

My mom got this bracelet from the Mountain Province in the 80’s when she was on tour with her activist singing group there. According to her it’s made out of some animal tooth, and she bought it from an old Igorot woman who was selling native jewelry. From what my mom remembers the woman she bought it from told her that she made the bracelet for her own daughter, but because it no longer fit she decided to sell it instead. I’ve always found the history of this bracelet cool and how it was passed on from mother to daughter on both ocassions.

     2. A Vintage Tigers Eye Ring from Columbia

I like chunky vintage rings, but I hardly find any that fit my very thin fingers. So it was great when my mom bought this from a bazaar a couple of years ago because aside from the fact that it’s chunky and very vintage looking, it fits me well because it’s adjustable. I’ve been wearing it everyday after she told me it was mine to keep recently.

    3. Vintage Ray Ban sunglasses

These sunglasses are older than me. They were my mom’s in college, and she gave them to me when I was in high school after unearthing them from somewhere. It amazes me how sturdy they still are after all the years she used them (and eventually outgrew them) and after I’ve clocked in quite a bit of mileage with them too.

    4. An Amber Necklace

I’m crazy for Amber, and while this necklace hasn’t been handed down to me just quite yet, it’s my favorite. I just felt the need to put this in because I like it THAT much.

    5. A pair of Mexican Looking Earrings

These pair of earrings are also something that my mom bought in the 80’s. She got them from a jewelry street vendor in San Diego, and I love its detail as well as its colors. Another reason why I like these so much though is because they remind me of what my mother’s sense of style was back then which was very reflective of the life she lead. I’ve always liked things which have stories behind them, and as far as stories go these pair of earring have a pretty interesting one to tell.

5 Things I Like for the Month of September:

I’ve decided to start this new thing where I blog about “5 Things” every so often. It can be “5 Things” about ANYTHING, and though I don’t quite know why exactly I’ve started doing this I’ll say it’s because I’ve always liked lists and the number 5.

So here’s my very first “5 things” entry about the “5 Things I Like for the Month of September.”

    —————————————————————————————————————

    1. Berocca Vitamin C

I feel like I’m an amateur drug pusher when I go on about Berocca, but I seriously cannot stop talking wonders about it. For me, this is the craziest Vitamin C out there because I’ve tried it, tested it, and it’s CRAZY effective. Just dissolve one of these babies in half a glass of water and you’ll feel so much better only a couple of hours after.

It’s most especially effective if you feel like you’re coming down with a cold or if you’re tired and need an energy boost.

    2. Carmex Lip Balm

Though I buy all sorts of lip balm because it’s a product that I use daily; and I’m just a consumerist that way, Carmex is probably the one brand that I will ALWAYS buy because it’s highly effective. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how well and instantly it moisturizes lips.

    3. Tweezerman tweezers

I’m not a big beauty product junkie but I think Tweezerman tweezers are a really good investment to make. They’re able to get the fine little hairs that my old tweezers bought in a drugstore in Japan couldn’t get, and just for the satisfaction alone of not getting frustrated when plucking your eyebrows, I’d say buy a pair.

    4. Suits

I don’t remember the last time I was THIS caught up with a non crime genre TV show. All I can say though is that Suits is a really cool TV show because it’s not too heavy, but not mindless either. It also doesn’t hurt that Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams are really good looking too.

    5. Borough’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

I used to love it a lot to begin with, but recently I’ve been REALLY into Borough’s grilled cheese and tomato soup. Sometimes, I have this eerie feeling that it’s the only thing I want to eat.
